After studying chemistry and physics in 1906 from Presidency College, Calcutta, Sukumar went to the College in 1911 for higher education in the field of printing.
There he studied photography and printing technology and in time he debuted as India's leading photographer and lithographer. Sukumar returned to Calcutta in 1913. Sukumar, while studying in England, purchased the land of Upendra Kishore's to set up a printing press to create and print high-quality colourful halftone blocks.
